I learnt an important thing yesterday, while working on the WorkConnexions corporate website. Apache uses a file called .htaccess that lets you configure folder level permissions for your website. It’s not really the best way to set up this configuration, but if you are using shared hosting, then it’s your only option. Anyway, I set up the new website but kept getting all sorts of weird errors. It turns out that I didn’t have a .htaccess file in that folder and the one in the parent directory was being used instead. WordPress didn’t like that! I remember trying to debug a problem for a friend who runs a term life insurance website, but had never got to the bottom of it.
Morale of the story. If you’re using .htaccess files, make sure they’re in the right place!
