It’s interesting to see that Cisco have a focal point for their user community called The Cisco Learning Network. If you’ve ever done any Cisco certification you’ve probably been here as it lets you connect with other people who have done their Cisco exams, are about to do them, or just have some problem with equipment which they are trying to resolve. It’s a true online community where you can create a blog, participate in a discussion and research any problem you might be wanting to find a solution for. All you have to do is create yourself a profile and contribute in the discussions.
I’ve managed to get a number of industry certifications over the years, mostly Microsoft ones, but I don’t actually have any Cisco certificates. I was interested in doing a security one some time ago, but never really got round to it. It really depends on the job you’re doing and I’m not really getting down and dirty with routers at the moment. Maybe some time in the future I will, but now just isn’t the right time, I’m finishing off an MBA and don’t think I’ll be looking at industry certification as my next step.
What about you? Have you ever done any Cisco exams? I’d be interested in heading how you found them (whether they were hard or easy) and how you prepared for them. Did you buy the books? Learn through experience or study using brain dumps? I think all three methods are valid, but they need to be used in conjunction rather than just focusing on one of them. Let me know.
