I’ve got me a NAS box!

I’m looking forward to heading home tonight, as my wife has just told me that my Buffalo Linkstation has arrived. It’s a storage device which connects directly to the network (a class of device called NAS – Network Attached Storage); but this one also has redundant storage in it. It has 2 1-Terabyte disks which I can configure to mirror each other; that way if one of the disks gets damaged, the other still contains a complete copy of the other. It means that I can store my photos, pictures and site backups without having to worry that they ever get lost.

The unit is self-contained, and it doesn’t need any mounts, so I can just slip it under a desk. It’s also intelligent enough to know when there’s a computer on the network and when all computers are asleep, it will just power down; awakening automatically as soon as a computer comes online. How awesome is that?
