I’ve been looking through Web Hosting Rating; a website that tries to put together a ranked list of some of the top website hosting money can buy. The top 5 on the list seem to be:
- Inmotion
- Fatcow
- JustHost
- Web Hosting Pad
- Host Clear
There are some interesting sites there, most of which I’ve never come across before; but it’s interesting to see what they offer and how they rate against each other. As you might know, one of my main interests is WordPress and Drupal is also up there, so one particular section of the site that interested me were sections dedicated to WordPress web hosting and Drupal web hosting. Both sections actually look at the hosting requirements of those CMS packages and map different hosts based on the requirements needed to host those platforms. It’s a superior comparison to just comparing features that the different providers might have. For example, it’s useless comparing one host that offers PHP to another that offers .Net, if you really want to run WordPress that needs PHP and MySQL.
The website also has a number of articles and tutorials relating to web hosting. These range from technical primers on how to use different features you may find on your host, all the way to comparisons between different hosts and what you need to be looking for when considering specific hosting requirements. It’s a great collection of information and should really be your starting point if you’re looking at hosting your own site. For example, did you know that a number of companies offer reseller packages that are a great way to start if you have a number of sites you want to host? They also give you the option to resell some of your space to others, as a way to offset the cost of your hosting. You can end up hosting your sites for free, and it you work hard at it, you can even grow your own hosting business!
