I came across a great article about how computer geeks are using virtual worlds to build virtual computers here at Wired. It goes into detail how this is done; the key being finding items in the game that can sit in one of two states. Once you figure out how to create logic gates, you have the building blocks you need to create an ALU and the rest of the logic required for a computer.

I’m not sure if there’s any money in doing this, so don’t quit your healthcare jobs just yet; but it’s a great hobby if you have the brains to do it!

Try out Virtual Suzi

Have you ever used Augmented Reality? It’s a way to combine the real world and the digital one to get some great effects. Well, if you haven’t you can give Virtual Suzi a try. If you head down to the Gadget Show site for Virtual Suzi, you can install the plugin, follow the instructions and watch Suzi come to life. And she looks great, definitely not needing any phentremine or anything like that.

Oh, and you’re going to need a webcam to make the whole thing work, but a lot of laptops have them built in and they only cost a few quid anyway. The question is .. is this the future of advertising?

Living in an Electronic World

I just woke up this morning and the first thing I did was hop online to check my bank accounts. While doing this, I was thinking about how many things we do are actually done virtually, in an electronic world. Banking, shopping, messaging are all things we’ve got used to doing online in a virtual sense. It’s only a matter of time before we’ll be plugging in for electric breakfast, smoking electronic cigarettes after virtual sex and then falling off to sleep dreaming of electric sheep.

Are you a stats fiend? If so, you might be one of those people who likes looking at all the metrics around your websites and comparing how they’re all faring against one another. There’s a good tool to add to your repertoire if that’s the case. It’s called the Site Stats Tool and can be a spot of fun pulling together figures of different websites. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking at a website about dental implants Plano or even a joke shop, you can always have fun with stats.

Are you looking for something to play? If so you might want to pop down to Manx Arcade a local website that has a huge collection of games for you to play. It’s run by a friend of mine who keeps it ticking over nicely and continually adds new games to it. Granted, you won’t find any certified diamonds down at Diamond Valley, but you’ll have a great time trying to beat the game. The other great thing about the website is that there are a number of competitive people playing, so you know it’s going to be challenging

Every day we come across loads of different acronyms for a whole bunch of different things, some of which are technology related, some of which are totally unrelated. Earlier today I was talking with some colleagues of mine and we were pulling forward acronyms from different aspects of technology and sharing what they meant with one another. I even learnt a few myself.

I was thinking that we could turn this into a simple game. Here are a list of acronyms; can you identify which ones are technology related and which aren’t?

And in our “you’ll find anything online” corner, here’s a great snippet from Gizmodo; a bra that changes shape based on your body temperature. Here’s how they describe it:

The upcoming Smart Memory Bra by Lisca lingerie senses a woman’s arousal through her body’s heat, then squeezes her boobs together accordingly. We ask, does a pushup bra really need an off switch?

The integrated memory foam bra reshapes under the influence of heat to enhance cleavage, making a woman more desirable when she’d like to be desirable. Or, you know, when she’s just a little sweaty.

They then describe an interesting scenario where the plan can backfire ending up with everyone at the party fighting over each other and hanging from the chandeliers. It will be interesting to see if this makes it to market.

Ok, you might not really need a street light, but it’s a great example of how you can get pretty much anything you like online. I found a website that lets you purchase any sort of commercial lighting including street lights. The website actually sells a whole collection of different lights, both residential and commercial and what I find really cool are these lights called “Grow Lights” which are designed to help plants grow.

It’s interesting how everything has it’s own terminology. As a geek, it’s not the first time I’ve been repremanded for using words people didn’t understand, but there are other corners of the world that have their own slang.

Did you know that in bingo for example, the number 26 is called “Pick and Mix”. And there’s a phrase for every number in the book. Are you interested in the online gambling market? I’ve been keeping an eye on it for the last few months especially as the Isle of Man is making inroads into eGaming. I came across a good online gambling paper online that has all sorts of information about online casinos, casino software as well as comments and analysis. For example, here’s a post about a study that suggests gambling should be legalised in the U.S.. It has all sorts of information like that.

I’m not really into playing online myself, but I’m sure that some of you out there might find this interesting. If that’s the case, check it out.
