Wifi in the yard

I’ve added another Wifi point to the house, just to manage to get some proper coverage in the yard on the patio. I was having some Wifi problems with the kiddie monitors, so had amassed a collection of Wifi rounters. I eventually got everything working on my original router by switching baby monitor; but the coverage isn’t so great in the back yard.

Anyway, I bought an addition for my HomePlug network, hooked a Wifi router into it and within 5 minutes had the network extension up and running! Now all I need is one of those outdoor fireplaces in the yard and I can really settle down there.

Are you moving to WordPress 3.0 Beta 1?

There’s a bit of movement in the WordPress world due to the new version of the package that’s currently in Beta 1. It will be a few weeks before the final version ships, but this version sports some important changes, things like the merge between WordPress and WordPress MU (the multi user version). There’s also a brand spanking new default theme and custom post type functionality. As you know, a number of the sites I run use WordPress, mainly because of the ease at which I can change things and add/edit content. I seriously recommend it to anyone out there.

Beta 1 is still a bit raw, so not recommended for production sites, but it doesn’t matter if you’re running a Joke Shop or a New York Movers website, if you’re running on WordPress you’re going to want the new version sooner rather than later. So get cracking as start testing WordPress 3.0 Beta 1 now.

Anyone remember Only Postcards

Well, it’s been some time now since I took down Only Postcards, and I haven’t had anyone email to say they miss it. Basically I moved the server off a Windows platform to a *nix box and it was the best move I’ve ever made. The one thing that kept me from doing it was a handful of ASP websites that wouldn’t run without a Microsoft OS. Only Postcards was one of them allowing people to send holiday cards and holiday cards from all around the world. It was a bit of a headache as it proved a magnet for spam and had to be managed.

There were another couple of sites that had to be dropped, but I had a soft spot for that one as I had devoted quite a bit of time and effort to it. Who knows, I may rebuild it some day …

Shape of the Only Network

I’ve been thinking about this website and maybe the time has come to change its look. The reality is, that anyone visiting here isn’t seeing a hosting company at the moment, but instead is finding a blog with some hosting topics and some more technical topics. I think we should be moving the emphasis away from blogging and more on the services we offer.

The reality is, if you were looking at the website of a company selling pressure washers, you’d expect to see the products they sell on the front page, not the ramblings of a madman (me) talking about stuff he finds interesting.

Get your access anywhere you like

When The Only Network started one thing that I thought would be really cool was that I could keep doing this regardless of where in the world I was. Well, it’s not that impossible. Thanks to satellite internet one can actually be online from anywhere in the world, regardless on whether you’re next to a phone line or not.

Now the question will always remain whether I can generate enough work to make it commercially viable. At the moment I make enough to pay for my hosting .. if I didn’t need to eat, I’d be fine!

Home Networks

Just had a glitch on my internet connection which recovered in a few minutes, but it got me thinking about my home network. It’s all centered around a wireless router that also has an ADSL modem in it, you know, one of these boxes that do it all. My first network was a collection of boxes including a used cisco router, a USB ADSL modem and a broken laptop as a print server. Oh, and a collection of coax cables to hook everything up. It’s so much easier nowadays with improvements in kit, I’ve got everything sorted with one box that cost a fraction of the price.

Makes you wonder what home networks will look like in 20 years! I bet everything will be “internet aware” and the fabric will be built right in to the house. Should be nice to watch it all happen …

Trimming down The Only Network

Well, I think I need to start getting ready to migrate this website off a Windows platform; and the best way to start will probably be by trimming off the excess that’s no longer used. These are old bits of the Only Network that really served as proof of concept and never gained any traction. These include:

Only e-Links: This was a bookmarking system but succummed to spam
Only Webcams: Webcam ranking system, too much in-fighting (and spam)
Only Books: Playing with Amazon affiliate system
Only Magazines: More affiliate testing

I don’t really need to carry these over with me, so they will be the first to go. It’s a pity I can’t give the website an alli weight loss pill or something similar to watch the excess fall away. But what has to be done, has to be done so I may dedicate a couple of evenings to it.

Need a prettier theme

I think I’ll be changing this theme, mainly because it looks a bit drab and I wouldn’t mind having something more colourful. I was looking at a website that specialises in St. Barts villa rentals and I was drawn in by all the pretty pictures of blues skies and blue seas, just like the picture alongside.

I’m not saying that I want my theme to be all pictures and no substance, but that touch of colour does help make visiting the blog more attractive and I suppose people will enjoy reading the blog more. It might not have to be scenery, something racy like a Polaris RZR would also look great.

Looking to a new beginning

Hmm, I’ve been looking over this website and there are certain bits of it that really need a makeover. Some parts of the site haven’t been updated in ages, from the Postcards section to the Books section. Actually, there are a lot more books I can add to that list, but I do have an Amazon store where I’m putting everything at the moment. I might just change the link to that.
