WordPress 2.7 almost here

It’s great to see that there’s a new beta of Wordpress 2.7. It’s currently in Beta 3 and looking just fine! I have it running on a couple of websites and it’s only time that has stopped me rolling it out to my other blogs. My favourite feature is the fact that a couple of essential plugins have been rolled into the main build. For example, the ability to upgrade WordPress to the latest build at the touch of a button is just genius.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re running a website about fat burner pills or a blog dedicated to live video casting solutions, I’m still favouring Wordpress as the best way to build a web presence.

That’s my $0.02 anyway ;)

Dealing with clients

I was speaking to a friend of mine who was having a hard day and he was going on about how some clients are harder to deal with than others. He was doing a job in a hotel in Las Vegas and was getting all sorts of stick from the boss’s PA. The man in charge seemed to be happy, but his PA was a real pitbull and just wouldn’t let go. In the end he just walked out and didn’t finish the job!

Sometimes client don’t realise that you’re just trying to get a job done and whining away at you isn’t going to help the job get finished sooner. Luckily there are tools like remote access and automated OS recovery products that can make things easier for you as they reduce the pain of solving a client’s problem.

Bug fix on Only Postcards

Buster

I had a bug that can only be called a “latent bug” on Only Postcards that I fixed recently. It was basically caused by not properly validating some data coming out of a database and falling over when a particular field was empty. I’m still considering whether I should rewrite the whole thing in PHP or just drop the whole site.

The great thing about it is that I’ve amassed an interesting collection of photos. I could almost imagine getting some slideshow software, relaxing in a massive armchair (I saw some great home theater furniture on a website yesterday) and watching a brilliant presentation on a giant screen. Heck, if I got myself a mobile satellite service, I could organise an outdoor viewing.

In my dreams huh?

Get a free ski ticket

Interesting idea down at Snowlist.com, a free classifieds site for the Utah Mountain Community. They are giving a free lift pass to all members who submit 10 free items in their free listings section. It’s bound to attract some traffic and help improve the presence of the website.

Here’s the press release

FOR NEW AND RETURNING SKIIERS, SNOWLIST.COM

OFFERS SKI GEAR AT THE RIGHT PRICE: FREE

Utah, date here—Snowlist.com, an online resource for mountain enthusiasts living in and visiting Utah, is making it easier to try skiing for the first time—or to hit the slopes after a long hiatus.
The web site’s classified ad listing not only offers ski equipment for sale or trade, but also an ever-changing list of free gear that can help both skiers who are new to the sport—and those who need to update their equipment before they return to the mountains.
“The Free Stuff listing gives news skiers a chance to test out the sport by minimizing their investment in ski gear,” said Snowlist.com founder Sarah Langridge. “And it’s a great way to clean out your closet and get rid of equipment you no longer need.”
Placing classified ads on snowlist.com is free.
Carter Gregory, a former ski racer and now Snowbird Race Team coach, grew up on the slopes of Park City, where his dad Tom taught him to ski. Last year, Carter was able to return the favor by replacing his dad’s outdated skis—for free.
After spending more than 20 years on the National Ski Patrol, the elder Gregory, took a break from skiing. When he was ready to start again, Carter knew the transition would be easier for his dad with a pair of skis that were more ‘new school.’ He found a free pair of Volkl Cross Rangers on Snowlist.com.
“The free price tag was perfect and it was a real boost to his enjoyment of skiing again,” said Carter Gregory.
Snowboarder Mickey Vriens was excited to share his joy of sliding down mountains with his eight year-old son Ashton. But it wasn’t long before Ashton wanted to give downhill skiing a try too.
“I didn’t want to spend the money to outfit him with alpine gear, but I was able to find a free pair of kids Rossignols on Snowlist.com,” said Vriens. “This made both of us happy… the price was right and he is now learning both sports. We’ll see which one he prefers in the long run.”
Because free stuff listed in the classified ads of Snowlist.com tends to move quickly, Langridge recommends that online visitors sign up for an RSS feed on the site, which will alert them by email when new listings for free equipment are posted.
Snowlist.com serves residents, visitors, ski racers, Realtors and businesses in Utah’s mountain communities by offering the ability to:
 find a place to stay by distance to the lifts
 buy, trade, sell or find free ski equipment and other mountain gear
 peruse the menus of local restaurants and listings of ski shops
 find a ski partner
 get local race results and check out ski forums
 find a mountain home to buy
 check out the weather and avalanche forecast
 link to any of the 13 airlines serving Utah’s mountain regions and to car rental companies
 find a job on or off the mountain.

Giving away freebies is always a great way to draw eyeballs to your website. It helps increase your credibility and is a great way to encourage readers to recommend your site to other people. And to top it off, people will blog about it (like I am); and you know you can never have too many inbound links.

If you’re planning a trip to the Utah mountains, check them out.

Trimming down The Only Network

Odd places for a Microsoft Windows Crash

Well, I think I need to start getting ready to migrate this website off a Windows platform; and the best way to start will probably be by trimming off the excess that’s no longer used. These are old bits of the Only Network that really served as proof of concept and never gained any traction. These include:

  1. Only e-Links: This was a bookmarking system but succummed to spam
  2. Only Webcams: Webcam ranking system, too much in-fighting (and spam)
  3. Only Books: Playing with Amazon affiliate system
  4. Only Magazines: More affiliate testing

I don’t really need to carry these over with me, so they will be the first to go. It’s a pity I can’t give the website an alli weight loss pill or something similar to watch the excess fall away. But what has to be done, has to be done so I may dedicate a couple of evenings to it.

Welcome to the new computer

So, while we were away, we bought a new computer for Camille. Her old one was starting to throw some problems with its USB ports and the screen was starting to come loose. The problem with laptops is that they are rather hard to repair, so we thought we’d get a new one to make things easier for her. At the moment she’s installing software on it and preparing it for use, a process not unlike buying crib bedding or baby clothes for a new member of the family. In reality, it’s actually much easier preparing a computer as it doesn’t struggle and wet the place.

Anyway, we have Office on it and her email is all set up. Now to get some graphic design programs on and transfer her photos over. Ah .. there’s always something to do. But .. one day, I’ll get myself a netbook, but not just yet …

Back in the swing of things

Peel Castle at Peel, Isle of Man

So I’m back on the Isle of Man and have finally caught up with all the email I had. Now it’s a matter of dealing with all the bits and pieces that were raised in the emails. I have some changes to make the the BCS website, I have some blogging things to do and I need to help a friend of mine get his wireless router sorted.

The funny thing is that I actually enjoy doing all those things so it’s really not a hassle helping people out. The blogging bit is fun and helping people getting wireless routers set up gives me an opportunity to play with new gadgets and see how they work. Strange hobby huh?

Need to move

I need to move this website over to my new upstream hosting provider, Tubu.net, but the biggest issue I have is that most of the subsections on this site need Windows to run (as they are built in ASP). Only Postcards was one of the first websites I ever built and I’m quite reluctant to throw it all away. It’s like an old pair of UGG boots, they look terrible, you know you need to change them, but they’re just so comfortable you don’t really want to. But just like baby clothes, you eventually grow out of them and have to switch to something else.

One option is to try and see if I could run the sites on Chillisoft’s ASP implementation. It’s ASP for Linux boxes but I’m really not sure how it will perform. I guess the best way to find out would be to try it out. I’ll keep you posted.

Approaching a spam milestone

SIERRA MADRE, CA - MAY 29: Spam, the often-ma...

This blog seems to be getting a few hundred spam comments a day and I’ve just noticed that I’ve just superceeded 48,500 spam comments stopped by Akismet. Not that I mind spam so much nowadays; my plugins do an awfully good job in stopping them get through, but it’s still a pretty big number. Most of them seem to be garbage nowadays though there’s the obligatory ones for pharmaceuticals, cheap  Rolex and Seiko watches and even high speed satellite internet.

I’ve actually noticed that I’m not even running Bad Behaviour on this blog, it’s just Akismet, so having 2 comments to moderate out of the 1000+ that were trapped is pretty good going I thought. Do you get lots of spam?
